Lismore is more of a residential town than its coastal neighbours. It is surrounded by a very pretty coastal hinterland and it is worthwhile exploring one of the many scenic drives around the area. Lismore is the administrative centre of the Northern Rivers region. It has the main hospital, large courthouse, as well as a university and medium size [but large by local standards] shopping centre. None of these are really tourist attractions. Better shopping can be had in other places. The Wilsons River runs through town, however it is dirty and some people may not wish to swim in it, it is safe in that there are no crocodiles, or sharks despite of the legend of "Hector", a crocodile rumoured to have inhabited the river at one point, he now is long gone.

There are a number of historical buildings and churches in the town and the Lismore Regional Art Gallery is worth a look. There is an interesting music and creative scene in the town, driven mostly by the many music and art students as well as those following alternative lifestyles in Lismore and surrounding areas.

The Lismore Lantern Parade is a highlight on the calendar and is held annually around the winter solstice, accompanied by the lanterns the event is a great showcase of local music, art and street culture.

There is a nice big old fashioned playground and park in the centre of town, if the kids needs some exercise. Other attractions include a movie theater, and some shopping. There is a degree of nightlife, mostly owing to the town hosting a university. If you can get directions there are a few waterfalls to go swimming around 10-20 minutes out of town. In general, there is little to do in the town-its mostly a town geared towards the locals.
