Wetzlar has a very beautiful old city center with half-timbered houses, small hidden parks and exclusive boutiques and restaurants. One great sight of Wetzlar that everyone who visits the city must see is the cathedral in the city center. The building of the cathedral is still unfinished, which is something unique since the building of the cathedral started approximately in the 9th century, so the cathedral has many different architectural styles. In one of the many parks of Wetzlar is an open air theatre. In the “Rosengärtchen” park, the open air theatre opens its gates at the beginning of summer and offers a lot of different plays.

One unique thing about Wetzlar is the city’s only Irish Wolfhound. The Wolfhound can be seen every day in the parks of Wetzlar and in the winter time the dog wears a set of reindeer antlers. There are many bars and pubs in Wetzlar’s city center, but one of the most special bars is “Pony Bar”, a 5-minute walk away from the cathedral. The “Pony Bar” is a very small and simple bar, but the customers make the bar something special. Folks from all over Wetzlar come here to enjoy their drinks and the atmosphere cannot really be described, you just have to go there and experience the vibes of the “Pony Bar”, there is at least one fight every night or someone starts singing. The best time of the year to visit Wetzlar is probably the time around Christmas because there is the “Weihnachtsmarkt” at “Schillerplatz” and the whole city is covered in snow making the city look like a picture on a postcard. In the summertime visitors can enjoy the bars at the river and the open air theater, as well as the many Italian ice cream parlours in the city center.

The “Oberkrainer” is a variation of a burger that can only be bought at the gas station at “Bergstrasse”. The “Oberkrainer” was invented at the gas station at “Bergstrasse” and has become the must-eat snack in Wetzlar, it cannot be found anywhere else in Germany. There is also a Hessian restaurant near the cathedral where you can eat and drink traditional Hessian food and beverages. The menu card of the restaurant is very small, but also very good. The restaurant also has a shop next to the kitchen in which you can buy traditional Hessian products, as well as a wide range of postcards on which Hessian sayings are translated into plain English, so the sayings don’t make any sense in English but it sounds funny for the local Hessian customers
