Juan Dolio and the new part of Juan Dolio, named "Villas del Mar" are the biggest touristic centers on the south coast.


The area is experiencing an enormous building boom at the moment and is converted from an all inclusive hotel area to a luxury apartment resort with caribbean beaches, yacht harbours, golf courses, and all one would expect.

      Fior di Loto in the older, western part of Juan Dolio is decorated in East Indian style. The owner is an Italian woman named Mara who also runs an orphanage for unwanted young girls in India. She stays there for several months each year, but was not there this June or July. My room had a refrigerator and a cooking stove and a fan for $30 US (the price is slightly higher in pesos). There was no AC, but the room was comfortable and convenient. If you are taking a guagua or cab from Las Americas Airport ask them to drop you off at La Ferreteria (hardware store) antes de la Marena (a Co-op Hotel). The staff is helpful and will lend you pots and pans and other items to cook and eat with. There are several other hotels and pensiones several blocks East. Motoconchos charge $100 pesos for most rides. You can take a guagua on the main highway (1 block N of Fior di Loto) to the Banco Popular for $30 pesos. This is the only bank in Juan Dolio, and has an ATM. The Shell station 2 blocks W of the Marena also has an ATM.
