Sagunto is first mentioned by the Romans, more than 2000 years ago. Remains of this age are the Castle of Sagunto and the Roman Theatre.

During the 8th century, under muslim rule, the city was known as Murviedro (translated as old walls) and started to lose importance against Valencia, but unlike Valencia, Sagunto allowed the presence of jews, whose Jewish quarter can still be visited. In 1239 was conquered by Jaime the First of Aragon and incorporated to the Crown of Aragon.

In the 19th century the city recovered its ancient name of Sagunto and has since them increased its industrial engine. The region still carries the Muslim name of Camp de Morvedre.
