Tychy was originally established as an agricultural settlement right in the middle of the medieval trade route between [wiki=4fc0a203041d1219cef7222fa2bb5576]Mikołów[/wiki] and [wiki=e1e8a6af504255d1f9fd74a29ab7dee2]Oświęcim[/wiki], first documented in 1467. From 1629 onward, the village began to grow, mainly due to the presence of the budding Tychy Brewery producing the town's signature "Tyskie" beer.

In 1742, Tychy was forcibly annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia during the First Silesian War with neighboring Austria, remaining territorially a part of Prussia (and later Germany) until just after the First World War. Discontent over German rule by the city's predominantly Polish population erupted into warfare between 1919 to 1921 during the Silesian Uprisings. Following a successful third revolt and brokered peace treaty, Tychy joined the Second Polish Republic in 1921.

After World War II, the city was designated by the Polish government as a non-self-sustaining city supplying adjacent Katowice. During this period, many blocks of flats and housing estates were built throughout the 1950s and 1970s.

Today, Tychy is a city is famous for its huge economic zone, its Fiat and Opel factories in the city's eastern districts, and its worldwide famous [url=http://www.tyskie.pl/]Tyskie[/url] beer.
